Consent and boundaries in intimate dating
Make agreement clear and leave room to pause, stop or change your mind.
Consent belongs to each moment
Agreeing to chat, meet or kiss does not imply agreement to sex. An earlier yes does not settle a later choice. Check that both people freely want the same next step, and stop when the answer is unclear. Silence, freezing or hesitation should never be treated as permission to continue.
Agree on simple ways to check in
You do not need a complicated script. ‘Are you comfortable?’ and ‘Would you like to pause?’ can create room for an honest response. Listen to the answer rather than asking until it changes. If alcohol or other circumstances make a clear decision difficult, postpone intimacy.
Respect a change of mind
Anyone can stop without having to justify the decision. Respond calmly, give space and ask what would help them feel comfortable now. Paying for dinner, travelling or previous intimacy creates no obligation. The same principles apply to all partners, including trans people: attraction never replaces a freely made choice.
